Bakhoors and Oudh oils have gained great cultural and religious significance in ancient civilizations around the world, being described as a fragrant product as early as 1400 BC in one of the world’s oldest written texts — the Sanskrit Vedas from India.
Bakhoor first originated with Arabia’s nomadic Levantine tribes, who upon setting up camp, would burn agarwood chips to both fragrance the air and deter insects.
Bakhoor is used during special occasions such as weddings, or simply for relaxing purposes at home or office. In Arabian culture, it’s a traditional gesture to pass the bakhoor among guests, so they can scent their hair, clothing and hands. This is believed to be a as integral to hospitality as serving coffee and dates.
The term “Bakhoor” refers to wooden chips that are soaked in the perfumed oils of the Oud, which is the resin extracted from the Aquilaria tree. This tree releases a dark fragrant resin from the infected mould, to protect itself. This resin is what is used to soak the wooden chips to create what is known as the “Bakhoor”.
